Aaron Mbimbe backs David Pagou’s Cameroon project after positive international break

Cameroon ended the latest international break with two wins and a draw, strengthening belief in David Pagou’s developing project despite concerns over the team’s performance in possession.

The Indomitable Lions opened the period with a 3-1 victory against Comoros, followed that with a 1-1 draw against Congo-Brazzaville and then beat Cote d’Ivoire 1-0 in a friendly.

The results were encouraging, although Cameroon did not produce particularly impressive football across the three matches. The side nevertheless showed it could secure positive outcomes while continuing to develop under Pagou and his staff.

Mbimbe sees signs of progress

Pagou has spoken of continuing to transform his squad, and the team will head into the next international break in November with both greater certainty and unresolved questions.

Aaron Mbimbe, a former Cameroon central defender with seven international appearances and several Cameroon titles to his name, believes the work carried out since December 2025 is beginning to have an impact.

Speaking to Africafootest about the team’s progress since the arrival of the new coaching staff, Mbimbe expressed satisfaction with the direction of the squad. He sees a group that is gradually becoming more structured and beginning to develop a distinct identity.

The former defender believes the current foundations should be protected rather than overhauled. However, he identified two areas requiring particular attention: greater discipline when selecting players and a clearer tactical system.

Stability key to rebuilding process

For Mbimbe, the future of the national team will depend on more than tactical decisions. He says the environment surrounding the squad will also be crucial as Cameroon continues a rebuilding process that has lasted almost two years.

The team is young and needs time to develop, making stability and a calm atmosphere essential factors in helping the players improve. Maintaining those conditions, he believes, will allow the squad to grow without unnecessary disruption.

The former Indomitable Lions defender also approached the question of potential reinforcements with caution. He did not seek to challenge the choices made by the coach, but said there were player profiles that could add strength to the team.

FECAFOOT continues work on dual nationals

Mbimbe also highlighted the work being carried out by the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) to widen the pool of players available to the national team.

The federation is continuing its efforts to attract dual-nationality players, a process that could provide further options as the squad takes shape. Mbimbe considers that work an important part of the rebuilding project.

The October results have therefore provided encouragement, even if Cameroon’s performances remain a work in progress. They have offered support for Pagou’s plans, while the core of the team is beginning to emerge.

With more time, patience and calm, and with FECAFOOT continuing its efforts to bring in the best available talent, Cameroon’s young, rebuilding side can approach the November qualifiers with ambition.
