Yannick Sagbo and Benoît Assou-Ekotto, both football players in the English Premier League, have been accused of misconduct on social media by the English Football Association. They are alleged to have repeatedly performed a gesture known as the “quenelle,” which was created by the comedian Dieudonné and is considered by some to be anti-Semitic.
Sagbo, who plays as a striker for Hull City, and Assou-Ekotto, a defender on loan from Tottenham to Queens Park Rangers, have until April 8, 2014, to respond to the charges. This accusation follows a similar incident involving Nicolas Anelka, who was fined and suspended for performing the same gesture in December. Anelka later terminated his contract with West Bromwich Albion.
The “quenelle” gesture has sparked controversy due to its perceived anti-Semitic connotations, and actions related to it have faced scrutiny from football authorities and the public alike.
