Borussia Dortmund secured their spot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League despite a 1-2 home defeat against Zenit St. Petersburg. The German side advanced thanks to their commanding 4-2 victory in the first leg.
In the second leg, Zenit’s Salomon Rondon scored the opening goal with a diving header after being left unmarked by Dortmund’s Mats Hummels. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had an early chance for Dortmund in the 6th minute, but Zenit quickly responded with a goal from Axel Witsel in the 7th minute.
Despite Zenit taking the lead, Dortmund regained control of the match and created several scoring opportunities. However, it was Zenit’s Hulk who scored a stunning goal with a powerful strike to give his team the lead. Dortmund’s Sebastian Kehl equalized with a header just before halftime, making it 1-1.
With Zenit needing to score three more goals in the second half to advance, Dortmund’s defense held firm, ensuring their progression to the quarter-finals. The German club joins Bayern Munich as one of the teams to advance to the next stage of the Champions League.
