Villarreal’s Éric Bailly remains undeterred by the uphill battle facing his team after a devastating 4-0 defeat in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16 against Marseille (OM) at the Vélodrome. Despite the daunting task ahead, Bailly is determined to lead his team in a potential comeback, drawing inspiration from past footballing miracles.
In an exclusive interview with La Provence, Bailly expressed his unwavering belief in Villarreal’s ability to defy the odds and stage a remarkable turnaround in the tie.
He emphasized the importance of resilience and determination, highlighting the unpredictable nature of football.
“We must try to make a comeback even if it will be very difficult. The most important thing is to show what we did in the championship,” stated Bailly.
“Having conceded four goals, everyone thinks we are already eliminated from this competition. We have already done this kind of thing, you never know what could happen.”
Reflecting on the disappointing performance in the first leg, Bailly stressed the need for redemption and a return to form.
He acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge but remained optimistic about Villarreal’s prospects.
“My feeling is to respond present on the ground, to show a good image and a good face, which we did not do on the way out,” Bailly remarked.
“If we thought we’d conceded 4 goals in the first leg, we wouldn’t have even traveled. It’s football, we are aware of that, we have to see how we can turn the situation around on Thursday.”
As Villarreal prepares for the crucial second leg clash against Marseille, Bailly’s leadership and determination will be instrumental in inspiring his teammates to deliver a spirited performance and mount a memorable comeback in the Europa League.
