Orlando Pirates’ coach, Jose Riveiro, celebrated a thrilling victory in what he described as one of the most memorable Soweto derbies against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium. The Spanish mentor, now in his second season with Pirates, led his team to a dramatic 3-2 win over their arch-rivals, marking his fifth encounter in charge.
Reflecting on the pulsating clash, Riveiro expressed his delight at securing victory in a fiercely contested match that showcased the essence of a true derby.
He emphasized the entertaining nature of the game and the exciting moments it provided for both sets of supporters.
“I think it was a proper derby. I think the previous ones, at least in the league, were much more, I don’t want to say boring, but I think today we had much more opportunity to see much more football, much more different momentums in the game for both teams,” Riveiro commented.
Highlighting the significance of the victory for Orlando Pirates, Riveiro noted the importance of such matches in keeping the fans engaged and supportive of the team.
Despite conceding an early goal and starting the game cautiously, Riveiro praised his team’s resilience and determination to turn the tide in their favor.
“So, I’m sure that the people who left the stadium are hoping to come back and see one more time in the future, we are not gonna play anymore in the season but I think it’s one of those games that I think helps to keep our fans behind us.
Today we are the winning team, I think we were also the better team on the field even though we didn’t start [well].
We started a little bit shy and we conceded an easy goal early but I think after the goal, Orlando Pirates managed to play,” Riveiro remarked.
The victory for Orlando Pirates not only secured three crucial points but also added another chapter to the storied rivalry between the two clubs, leaving fans eagerly anticipating the next encounter between these fierce competitors.
