Bayer Leverkusen striker Sidney Sam has officially signed a contract with Schalke 04. The Gelsenkirchen club announced the signing of the German-Nigerian player on Wednesday morning. Sidney Sam, who has been one of Bayer Leverkusen’s standout performers this season, has committed to a four-year contract with Schalke, keeping him tied to the club until 2018. Although he is expected to complete the current season with Leverkusen, he will officially join Schalke on July 1.
Schalke’s sporting director, Horst Held, expressed confidence in Sam’s abilities, stating, “Sidney Sam has demonstrated, and not only through his superb performances this season, the impact he can have in attack. He can play in different positions, is very ambitious, and wants to succeed with Schalke.”
The 25-year-old attacking midfielder has impressed with 11 goals and 7 assists in all competitions this season for Leverkusen. Having made his last appearance for the German national team on November 19 in a friendly against England, Sam, trained at Holstein Kiel, debuted professionally with Hamburg in 2007. After a loan spell at Kaiserslautern in 2008, he joined Leverkusen in 2010. Despite being courted by the Super Eagles, Sidney Sam has chosen to represent the German national team.
