The newly appointed head coach for the Algerian National Football Team, is set to embark on his mission outside Europe as he arrives in Algeria to engage with the Algerian Football Federation (FAF). Petkovic steps in to take charge of the technical aspects of the Greens, succeeding Djamel Belmadi.
Upon his arrival, Petkovic is met with the task of revitalizing a team that has experienced a series of subpar performances in major events. Despite the challenges, he inherits a roster rich with world-class talent, including the likes of Atal,
Bensebaïni, Chaïbi, Aouar, Amoura, Bennacer, and Mandrea. Additionally, seasoned players such as Mahrez and Belaïli, along with promising talents like Guitane, Cherki, and Hadj-Moussa, await direction under the new leadership.
One of the coach’s immediate priorities will be to assess players in their thirties or those entering the twilight of their international careers.
While Belaïli and Mahrez may serve as guiding figures for the new generation, players like Mandi, Bounedjah, Feghouli, Slimani, and M’bolhi may find themselves out of the plans under the new coaching regime.
In preparation for critical tournaments such as AFCON-2025 in Morocco and the 2026 World Cup, Petkovic must address underlying issues that have hindered the team’s performance, leading to disappointing exits in recent competitions.
To address these challenges, Petkovic attended the Lazio Roma – AC Milan match at the Stadio Olimpico di Roma, a stadium he is familiar with from his previous coaching experiences.
Observing closely, he paid particular attention to two players, Bennacer and Adli, who could potentially form a formidable midfield partnership for the Greens.
Yacine Adli, whom Petkovic previously knew during his time at Bordeaux, emerges as a potential key player in the coach’s plans.
The prospect of revitalizing the Adli-Bennacer partnership is already sparking excitement among Algerian supporters, as the duo showcased impressive synergy during their time under Stefano Pioli at AC Milan.
The strategic move to meet the players, especially Adli, demonstrates Petkovic’s intention to evaluate and potentially integrate them into the Algerian national team.
As the coach undertakes this critical rebuilding phase, Algerian football enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the revival of the national squad under his seasoned leadership.
