Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro bids farewell to his role as the head coach of the Nigeria national team, citing the expiration of his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
During his 22-month tenure, Peseiro expressed dedication and gratitude to the players, NFF leadership, and staff, describing it as a period filled with sacrifice and enthusiasm.
Despite leading Nigeria to a second-place finish in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, criticism arose over his strategic choices, often favouring attacking creativity over defensive rigidity.
Peseiro and the squad were honoured with the national award of the Members of the Order of Niger (MON) and received plots of land and flats in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) from President Bola Tinubu.
The coach’s departure follows the Super Eagles’ 2-1 defeat to the hosts in the AFCON final at the Stade Alassane Ouattara in Ebimpé on February 11, 2024.
The NFF will now have the task of appointing a new head coach to guide the Super Eagles through future competitions.
Peseiro’s departure marks the end of a chapter for both the coach and the national team, with fans reflecting on the highs and lows of his leadership.
