As AfricaSoccer.com exclusively revealed weeks ago, Cameroon head coach Rigobert Song has been relieved of his position with immediate effect.
Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) President Samuel Eto’o officially announced the departure of the legendary defender as head coach of the Indomitable Lions in an interview with France 24 on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.
Following the disappointing performance of the Indomitable Lions at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, the Executive Committee of the Cameroonian Football Federation convened on Monday, February 5, 2024, to make crucial decisions.
Song, who had been at the helm as head coach since February 28, 2022, lost his position as his contract, which ended on February 24, will not be extended, AfricaSoccer.com reported
Under Song’s management, the Indomitable Lions endured a lacklustre record, with six wins, nine defeats, and eight draws in 23 matches.
Cameroon exited the tournament in Cote d’Ivoire at the Round of 16 stage after suffering a 2-0 defeat to their Nigerian rivals at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan last week.
The Executive Committee, led by Eto’o, determined that Song’s results did not justify a contract extension, prompting the need for a change in leadership.
During the meeting, each member of the executive committee was tasked with proposing the name of a Cameroonian coach as a potential successor to Song.
This decision marks a pivotal moment for the national football team as they seek a new direction and leadership to rejuvenate their performance on the international stage.
