CAF Referees Committee has taken the drastic measure of permanently excluding Moroccan referee Redouane Jiyed from the roster of approved African referees for continental matches.
This decision stems from Jiyed’s objection to being denied the opportunity to officiate more matches during the 2023 African Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.
The controversy arose when Jiyed, another referee, opted out of officiating the third-place match in the African Cup of Nations in protest against an undisclosed matter.
In response to this incident, the committee decided to impose a severe penalty on the 44-year-old for his actions.
The African Cup of Nations concluded with the hosts Côte d’Ivoire emerging victorious, defeating the Nigeria with a 2-1 triumph in the final match.
The Moroccan was supposed to handle the CAF Champions League match between CR Belouizdad and Al Ahly played in Algiers fortnight ago, but he was replaced after the incident in Cote d’Ivoire.
