Napoli’s caretaker coach, Francesco Caldona, has disclosed that Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen is currently experiencing fatigue following his intense participation in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Côte d’Ivoire. The 25-year-old striker showcased his prowess in the continental tournament, contributing significantly despite facing a formidable schedule.
Osimhen, who had previously missed several games this season due to injury, returned to peak form before heading to the AFCON in January.
Despite only registering one goal in the competition, he played a crucial role in guiding the Super Eagles to the final, where they eventually succumbed to a narrow 1-2 defeat against hosts Ivory Coast.
Following his commendable international exploits, Osimhen swiftly shifted his focus back to Napoli, scoring in both of his appearances since returning from the AFCON.
However, during Napoli’s recent clash against Cagliari, he was substituted five minutes before the full-time whistle.
Addressing Osimhen’s condition, Caldona emphasized, “He was only tired.” Caldona further praised Osimhen, describing him as a “fantastic guy” and expressing confidence that the striker, who netted two goals in two matches after his AFCON return, will gradually regain full fitness.
The caretaker coach acknowledged the toll of international tournaments on players, stating, “Don’t forget he played at AFCON.
Players are devastated when they return. He was tired also against Barcelona, but players always want to stay on the pitch.”
As Napoli navigates the challenges of the season, including Osimhen’s recovery and match fitness, the striker’s supporters eagerly await his return to peak form and continued goal-scoring prowess in Serie A.
