Angolan international, Clinton Mata, has defied expectations with an impressive career at Lyon since the summer of 2023, following more than a decade in the Belgian championship. The 31-year-old, who once envisioned a career in masonry, hopes to serve as an inspiration for young aspiring athletes.
Quietly making his way into Lyon, Clinton Mata swiftly established himself as a reliable player. With Les Gones, the Angolan international has participated in 18 Ligue 1 matches, 17 of which he started.
In the recent fixture against Nice on February 16, he was again featured in the starting lineup, contributing to a 1-0 victory with five recoveries and a crucial goal-saving play against Ndayishimiye in the 20th minute.
This performance aligns with his consistent displays over more than 10 years in the Belgian championship.
Yet, Mata did not foresee such a career. Having played for Eupen, Genk, and Bruges, he initially saw himself pursuing a career in masonry. Reflecting on his unexpected journey, he shared, “A lot of little boys dream of it, but that wasn’t my case.
When I watched the Champions League with my father, I said to myself: ‘It would be wonderful to be able to play it!’ But I didn’t know that one day I would become a professional because it wasn’t even a dream of mine.
I was planning to work in masonry because I really like buildings: building houses, selling apartments… So, football came over time and naturally,” as conveyed to the Ligue 1 website.
As Mata gradually embraced football, he joined Battice FC at the age of 13, near his home. Transitioning from left to right, he caught the attention of KAS Eupen in 2010, progressing from the U19s to the reserves before securing a spot in the professional team.
Originally a midfielder, Mata found his niche as a full-back in 2012, impressing clubs like Charleroi, Genk, and eventually Club Bruges, where he established himself as one of the Jupiler Pro League’s premier defenders from 2018 to 2023.
Reflecting on his unconventional journey, Mata acknowledges the surprise factor but hopes it serves as an inspiration for young athletes.
“No one expected me to have a career like this. I am a player who surprised everyone. I think it is also an example for young people who think that you cannot succeed without going through a training center.
Of course, it’s a strange journey, I’ve had to take many turns, but I think it can inspire some young people. You should never give up!” emphasized the 31-year-old.
