FIFA rankings: Egypt slips, Qatar soars, Argentina stays on top

FIFA unveiled the monthly rankings for national teams, for January 2024, revealing a decline for the Egyptian national team by 3 places, now standing at 36th globally and 4th in Africa, having previously occupied the 33rd position in the last ranking of 2023.

Meanwhile, the reigning World Cup champions, Argentina, maintained their top spot in the global rankings, with France securing the second position, followed by England in third place.

Teams such as Belgium, Brazil, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Croatia secured positions between fourth and tenth in the rankings.

Egypt’s national team currently sits in the fourth position among African teams with 1500.38 points, trailing behind Nigeria in third place with 1522.26 points, and preceding Ivory Coast in fifth place with 1494.57 points, who climbed 10 places after winning the African Cup of Nations.

During the recent international break, Egypt played four matches in the Africa Cup of Nations, drawing against Mozambique, Ghana, and Cape Verde with a score of 2-2 in each match, and finally against the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the round of 16, ending with a 1-1 draw before losing on penalties and exiting the tournament.

The rankings of African teams are as follows:

Morocco (12), Senegal (17), Nigeria (28), Egypt (36), Ivory Coast (39), Tunisia (41), Algeria (43), Mali (47), Cameroon (51), South Africa (58).

In terms of Arab teams, Qatar made a significant leap, climbing 21 places to 37th globally after winning the 2023 Asian Cup.

The rankings of Arab teams in FIFA’s monthly ranking are as follows:

Morocco (12), Egypt (36), Qatar (37), Tunisia (41), Algeria (43), Saudi Arabia (53), Iraq (59), UAE (69), Jordan (70), Oman (80), Bahrain (82), Syria (89), Palestine (97).

These rankings reflect the recent performances of national teams across various competitions and serve as a barometer for their standing on the global stage.
