Méchac Koffi, the former striker for AS Denguélé in Ligue 1 Côte d’Ivoire, is currently exploring the football landscapes of North Africa. Currently under contract with the Tunisian club Étoile Sportif Metlawi (ranked 8th), he is conducting a comparative study of the different North African championships, including those of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Koffi also shares insights into the atmosphere of the Senegal-Côte d’Ivoire match on Saturday, November 16, in Casablanca, Morocco.
Despite being the champion in 2012-2013 with the Entente Sportive de Sétif, Koffi expresses that the Tunisian championship has declined in level, citing instability in the last three years as a contributing factor. He notes that only five days into the current season, the league lacks the stability it once had.
Koffi explains his journey from Morocco to Algeria and now to Tunisia, attributing his move to Algeria to a desire for a change of scenery and a new experience, which was fulfilled with a championship title. However, he highlights contract-related issues in Algeria, which prompted him to move to Tunisia, where he took precautions to avoid facing similar challenges.
Despite playing for a club that might be considered average compared to other potential options, Koffi emphasizes that his integration has been smooth, with the club respecting the agreed-upon conditions. He acknowledges the trust and respect he receives from his original club.
Regarding the security and social aspects in Tunisia, Koffi mentions that while things are not entirely back to normal, with occasional disturbances affecting the championship schedule, overall, the situation is improving.
As someone well-traveled in North Africa, Koffi humorously dismisses the idea of landing in Egypt or Libya in the future, stating that it is not his wish.
Discussing the Ivory Coast’s return play-offs for the 2014 World Cup in Casablanca, Koffi expresses confidence that the Elephants will find a favorable climate, given the strong support they enjoy from fans in Morocco. He believes relocating the match to Casablanca will make the Elephants feel practically at home, with anticipated support from the Moroccan public.
