Senegal’s Krépin Diatta faces CAF sanctions after AFCON 2023 outburst

Senegalese international Krépin Diatta is reportedly facing sanctions from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in response to his controversial comments on refereeing following Senegal’s elimination in the round of 16 at AFCON 2023 against Ivory Coast (1-1, 4-5 tab).

Diatta, who plays as a right midfielder for AS Monaco, expressed his frustration in the mixed zone, accusing the referee of corruption and implying that the official’s decisions had unfairly affected the outcome of the match.

His comments, fueled by irritation, targeted a media officer of CAF, prompting the African football governing body to initiate an investigation.

According to sources, CAF has delivered its verdict, and it appears to be unfavorable to Diatta. The reported sanctions include a four-match suspension, with two matches suspended.

This implies that Diatta could miss the March gathering, or, if the suspension applies only to official matches, he may be absent from the 3rd and 4th days of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers scheduled for June.

Additionally, a $10,000 fine has been levied on the Senegalese player.

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has also reportedly been fined $10,000 in connection with the incident.

Diatta’s outburst reflects the emotional intensity that often accompanies high-stakes football tournaments, and the subsequent sanctions underscore the importance of maintaining sportsmanship and respect for officials’ decisions.

The controversy surrounding this incident highlights the challenges faced by football authorities in managing player behavior and ensuring fair play on and off the field.

As the football community awaits official confirmation from CAF and further details on the sanctions, the incident serves as a reminder of the need for players to exercise restraint and adhere to the principles of fair play, even in the face of disappointment and frustration.
