Kaizer Chiefs came from behind to reach half-time level at 1-1 with Siwelele FC in their Carling Knockout quarter-final on Sunday evening.
The Amakhosi were looking to respond after losing the Soweto derby to Orlando Pirates, while also seeking another victory over the Free State side following their Betway Premiership win earlier this season.
Siwelele made the stronger start and went close to taking the lead after only five minutes. Siphesihle Jeza met a powerful first-time effort inside the penalty area, but Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen produced a point-blank save.
The visitors continued to threaten and were rewarded six minutes later. Siyabonga Ndebele positioned himself at the back post to meet a floated corner and headed the ball into the far corner.
Kaizer Chiefs were given an opportunity to draw level 10 minutes before the interval when Mfundo Vilakazi won a foul against Vincent Pule inside the area. Mduduzi Shabalala took responsibility for the resulting penalty, but his effort clipped the top of the net.
Shabalala made amends in first-half stoppage time by winning another penalty after being fouled by Ndebele inside the box. Wandile Duba stepped up and converted from 12 yards, beating Jody February to make it 1-1 at the break.
Kaizer Chiefs started with Petersen, Solomons, Dortley, Moloisane, Mako, Maboe, Mthethwa, Vilakazi, Shabalala, Mmodi and Duba.
Their substitutes were Bvuma, Kwinika, Nkgwea, Mabaso, Ngcobo, Da Silva, Ighodaro, Velebayi and Abrahams.
Siwelele FC named February, Mfolozi, Khonyane, Sesane, Ndebele, Mokhuoane, Jeza, Leshedi, Marou, Mazibuko and Pule in their starting XI.
Their substitutes were Mthombeni, Ngcobo, Saile, Benjamin, Makhuvele, Lupalule, Thulo, Kobedi and Lepasa.
