USM Alger face Mamelodi Sundowns in CAF Super Cup final with $500,000 at stake

USM Alger have arrived in Pretoria ahead of Sunday’s CAF Super Cup final against Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld, with kick-off scheduled for 13:00 GMT.

The Algerian side are aiming to lift the trophy for a second time and avenge two defeats by the South African club in the CAF Champions League six years ago.

A second Super Cup appearance

This will be USM Alger’s second CAF Super Cup final. They won the trophy in 2023 after beating Egyptian giants Al Ahly 1-0.

The Algerian club booked their place in this year’s showpiece by winning the CAF Confederation Cup. They defeated Zamalek 8-7 on penalties after the two-legged final finished 1-1 on aggregate.

That dramatic victory secured USM Alger’s return to the continent’s annual clash between the winners of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

Previous meetings with Sundowns

USM Alger and Mamelodi Sundowns have met twice in official CAF competition.

Both matches came during the group stage of the 2019-20 CAF Champions League, with Sundowns winning on each occasion.

The Algerians will therefore be seeking a different outcome when the teams meet again at Loftus Versfeld, while also pursuing a second CAF Super Cup triumph.

Prize money on offer

The winners of the final will receive $500,000.

The losing finalists will be awarded $250,000.

Lamine N’Diaye in charge

USM Alger are coached by Senegalese tactician Lamine N’Diaye, who is regarded across the continent for his success in major CAF competitions.

N’Diaye has won the CAF Champions League, the CAF Confederation Cup and the CAF Super Cup during his coaching career.

The final gives USM Alger the opportunity to add another continental trophy to their collection, while Sundowns will look to maintain their record against the Algerian club in CAF competition.
