Nigeria win first FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title in Morocco

Nigeria made history by winning the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2026 in Morocco for the first time after beating Japan in the final.

Awawu Bashiru opened the scoring for Nigeria shortly before half-time, before Oluebube Umejiaku doubled their advantage just two minutes after the restart.

Japan reduced the deficit with 10 minutes remaining through Fuki Ito, but Nigeria held on to become the first African team to win the tournament.

The result completed a notable campaign for Nigeria, who had reached the final by beating Brazil 3-1 in their semi-final.

Japan claimed their place in the final after defeating holders Korea DPR 4-1 on penalties in the last four. The match had gone to a shootout after a decisive own goal in added time.

Korea DPR, the reigning champions, recovered to secure third place with a 6-0 victory over Brazil. Four of their goals came during the final 30 minutes of the match.

Umejiaku was also recognised as the tournament’s leading individual player, receiving the Golden Ball after helping Nigeria to the title.

Korea DPR forward Yu Jong-hyang was awarded the Silver Ball, while Japan’s Fuki Ito received the Bronze Ball.

The Golden Boot went to Maddie DiMaria of the USA, who finished the tournament with 12 goals. Yu Jong-hyang and her Korea DPR team-mate Ri Ui-gyong shared the Silver and Bronze Boots respectively, with both players scoring 4 goals – 8 fewer than DiMaria.

Korea DPR goalkeeper Kim Son-gyong won the Golden Glove award.

The FIFA Fair Play award was presented to Japan.
