The Gambia concludes its campaign in the U17 Women’s World Cup with a goal-laden match against France. After facing substantial defeats against North Korea (11-0) and the United States (6-0), the Scorpions encountered another challenging match against France. The French team, aspiring for a spot in the quarter-finals, demonstrated their prowess, securing a 10-2 victory.
In the first half, goals from Pauline Cousin, Sandie Toletti (twice), an own goal by Metta Sanneh, and Léa Declerq propelled France to a 5-0 lead. Gambia, showing resilience, capitalized on a French defensive error, with Pendah Bah scoring the first-ever goal for Gambia in this category of the World Cup. France extended their lead with goals from Kadidiatou Diani, Declerq, Griedge Mbock Bathy, and Pauline Cousin. Declerq sealed the victory with a qualifying goal in the 85th minute, followed by a late own goal from Mariama Bojang.
Although eliminated from the tournament, the Gambian team can take solace in scoring two goals. Sianney Sissohore, the youngest player in the tournament, also made a noteworthy contribution by finding the back of the net and reducing the score for her team.
