Orlando Pirates’ new arrivals making an early impact in the PSL

Orlando Pirates will head into the latest FIFA international dates encouraged by the contribution of a large group of newcomers who are enjoying their first season at the club.

The squad includes players signed from other clubs as well as those promoted or recruited from within, giving the Buccaneers a noticeably fresh look this campaign.

Mpho Padime and Gamphani Lungu were Pirates’ two standout performers on Saturday, despite both still adapting to their first seasons in the colours of the club.

Padime has impressed with a composed approach and the assuredness required to succeed in football. Lungu, meanwhile, is not new to the PSL, having spent eight years at SuperSport United/Siwelele, but is now beginning his first campaign with Pirates.

Thapelo Mokobodi has also attracted attention for his combative work in midfield, with Pitso Mosimane following his progress.

At the other end of the pitch, Sbangani Zulu is already receiving loud acclaim from supporters whenever he takes possession in defence. He has not even played 10 matches for the Bucs.

Simphiwe Masilela is continuing to develop as he adjusts to the demands and rhythm of an attacking midfield role, while Kabelo Kgositsile has offered glimpses of the pace and wing play that could make him a major prospect.

Kgositsile is in his first season at Pirates after spending the 2025/26 campaign on loan at Baroka.

Matome Mmolai has had a slower start, but those who watched him regularly at his previous clubs remain eager to see what he can produce once given an opportunity. His style has been compared with that of Themba Zwane.

Mthetheleli Mthiyane has provided the tidy, disciplined work expected of a central midfielder. His next challenge is to match the reputation behind his nickname, Vieira, which refers to the former France midfield enforcer.

The competition for places remains strong. Neo Rapoo possesses a left foot capable of making a difference, but his opportunities are likely to arrive gradually. Bohlale Ngwato has similarly been given only a brief introduction and must wait for further chances, despite the positive reports surrounding his performances for Siwelele FC.

Norwegian striker Sebastien Pederson has yet to make a major impact, although his move from Scandinavia to Southern Africa means he deserves time to settle.

Together, the group has given Pirates evidence that their recruitment is beginning to produce depth, with several players still working towards establishing themselves as regulars.
