Sporting fans honour Cristiano Ronaldo with seventh-minute tribute

Sporting fans paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo during their match against Moreirense at the Estadio Jose Alvalade on Saturday, applauding in the seventh minute to mark the Portuguese forward’s famous number.

Supporters stood throughout the stadium and applauded warmly in an emotional show of appreciation for Ronaldo, who began his professional career with Sporting before moving to Manchester United in 2003.

The tribute came after the 41-year-old announced his retirement from international football with Portugal, bringing his 23-year association with the national team to an end.

Sporting had already issued a message thanking their former player following his decision.

“Thank you for everything you have done for our country, you will remain forever in the history of Portugal,” the club said.

Ronaldo announced his international retirement on Thursday after 23 years representing Portugal. He leaves the national team as the men’s world record holder for both appearances and goals, with 234 caps and 146 international goals.

His final appearance for Portugal came on 24 September 2026, when they beat Wales 1-0 in Lisbon in the Nations League.

Ronaldo continues to play for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.
