Cristiano Ronaldo leaves nine international records that may stand for years

Cristiano Ronaldo has ended his Portugal career with nine international records that could prove exceptionally difficult to break, including the most goals and appearances in men’s international football, as well as landmark achievements in the UEFA European Championship and FIFA World Cup.

Ronaldo finished with 234 caps and 146 goals for Portugal, making him the leading scorer in international football history. He also captained his country to UEFA Euro 2016 and won two UEFA Nations League titles.

Although the FIFA World Cup remained the major international trophy to elude him, Ronaldo scored 11 goals across six editions of the tournament. His longevity and consistency have left a collection of records that may take many years to challenge.

International goals and appearances

Ronaldo leads the all-time international scoring list by 20 goals from Lionel Messi, who also announced his international retirement during the current year, and by 38 from Ali Daei.

Romelu Lukaku is the nearest active player, with 94 goals, although he is 33 and faces a substantial task to close the gap. Robert Lewandowski has scored 92, while Harry Kane still has the opportunity to add to his total for England but would need more than 50 goals to draw level with Ronaldo and then surpass him.

Erling Haaland has 65 international goals and may be among the players theoretically capable of approaching the mark. However, his prospects will depend partly on how many major tournaments Norway reaches. FIFA World Cup 2026 was Norway’s first appearance at a major tournament since UEFA Euro 2000.

Kylian Mbappe has scored 67 times for France, meaning he has not yet reached half of Ronaldo’s total.

Ronaldo also holds the record for international appearances, with 234 for Portugal. Messi is second on 208 for Argentina, while Luka Modric is third, 28 appearances behind his former Real Madrid team-mate. Modric is 41 and nearing the end of his international career, according to a report by PlanetFootball.

The closest active player to Ronaldo’s appearance record is Qatar international and Al Sadd captain Hassan Al-Haydos, who has played 193 times. He still requires a significant number of further matches to approach the top.

Ronaldo represented Portugal over 23 years, a period that would be extremely difficult for another player to replicate.

Goalscoring longevity

Rather than declining after turning 30, Ronaldo became more prolific for Portugal. He scored 94 international goals after his 30th birthday, compared with 52 before it.

Messi is next on that particular list, with 68 goals for Argentina after turning 30. Only four players in football history have scored at least 94 international goals, regardless of their age when they reached the total.

Ronaldo scored in 96 different matches for Portugal. Only Messi and Ali Daei, alongside Ronaldo, have scored in as many separate international games.

He also found the net against 49 different national teams, three more than Messi. While the expanded FIFA World Cup may give future players more opportunities to face different opponents, reaching Ronaldo’s figure will still depend on qualifying draws and the tournaments their countries enter.

Another of his records is scoring for Portugal in 23 different calendar years. To beat it, a player would need to begin their international career early, continue into their forties and score at least once every year without interruption.

UEFA European Championship records

Ronaldo is the leading goalscorer in UEFA European Championship history, with 14 goals. He is five ahead of Michel Platini, while Alvaro Morata and Kane have seven apiece.

Morata would be 35 and Kane 34 when the next edition begins. Kane may be the strongest potential challenger, but if the next tournament is his final opportunity, he would need eight goals to overtake Ronaldo. Only Platini has scored eight in a single edition.

Ronaldo is also one of only two outfield players to have made more than 20 appearances in the competition. He holds the overall appearance record with 30 matches.

A player would need to reach the final in four consecutive editions, then play one further match, to exceed that total, because reaching a final involves seven games. UEFA has previously shelved plans to expand the tournament, meaning the record may require an international career close to 20 years and consistently deep runs.

FIFA World Cup landmark

Ronaldo and Messi are the only outfield players to have appeared in six FIFA World Cup editions. Ronaldo is the only one of them to score in every tournament he played.

Repeating that achievement would require a player to remain at international level for almost two decades, qualify for six successive World Cups and score in each one. With the tournament held every four years, simply reaching six editions is a formidable challenge, before adding the requirement of scoring at every tournament.
