Messi’s silence after Ronaldo’s international retirement sparks debate

Lionel Messi has not joined the football stars paying tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portugal captain announced his international retirement, prompting widespread debate among supporters.

The absence has attracted particular attention because Ronaldo, the Al Nassr forward, publicly supported Messi when the Argentine ended his own international career with Argentina.

Ronaldo announced his decision unexpectedly on Thursday, two days ago, despite his dispute with Portugal manager Jorge Jesus appearing to be close to resolution. Former team-mates and rivals were quick to send messages of appreciation, but Messi was notably missing from the tributes.

Ronaldo’s message to Messi

Ronaldo was among the leading figures to acknowledge Messi after the Argentine’s farewell appearance for Argentina.

On 7 October, hours after Messi’s final match for Argentina, against Benin, the Inter Miami player posted a farewell message to the country’s supporters on Instagram. Ronaldo responded with a message of his own.

Messi wrote: “Yesterday’s match was my last one, and I already miss wearing the sky-blue and white shirt. I know I am making the right decision. It has been an incredible journey, filled with joy and also some sadness, but I am certain that every step I took was worth it.”

Ronaldo replied: “Leo, so many years defending your country, and a story that will last forever. All my respect for what you achieved with Argentina. A hug.”

That was not the first time Ronaldo had offered support to his long-time rival. On 12 August, Messi published an extended message expressing his grief after the death of his father. Ronaldo responded with words of comfort.

“A big hug to you and your loved ones during this difficult moment, Leo. Stay strong,” he wrote.

However, at the time of writing, Messi has not made a similar public gesture towards Ronaldo following the Portuguese player’s announcement.

The pair remained at the centre of world football’s individual rivalry for almost two decades. Ronaldo won the Ballon d’Or five times, while Messi claimed the award on eight occasions.

Their direct competition was especially intense during the nine-year period from 2009 to 2018, when they represented Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively in the Spanish clasico.

Tributes to Ronaldo

Messages of respect for Ronaldo continued to arrive after his decision to retire from international football. Neymar da Silva and James Rodriguez were among the first to respond, both describing him as a “legend”.

Vinicius Junior posted a brief but striking tribute: “Forever number 1.”

Several former team-mates and opponents also sent farewell messages. Sergio Ramos used humour as he wished Ronaldo enjoyment in the next stage of his life, while Rio Ferdinand recalled their time together, writing: “It was like a movie, my brother.”

Pepe said Ronaldo’s contribution extended beyond football. One of the most personal messages came from Nani, who played alongside him for both Portugal and Manchester United.

Nani expressed his gratitude at having been part of Ronaldo’s career, saying his legacy had inspired generations of players, before saluting the Portugal captain.

Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot, Marcelo and Thibaut Courtois also joined those bidding farewell to Ronaldo.
