Barcelona target Real Betis defender as Hansi Flick seeks January defensive addition

Barcelona are preparing to explore the winter transfer market for defensive reinforcements, with manager Hansi Flick making the improvement of his side’s back line a clear priority.

Flick has indicated that the club will monitor the market for players capable of strengthening the defence, as concerns grow that the back line remains one of the weaker areas of his squad.

Several defenders have been linked with a move to Barcelona in recent weeks, including Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez. The Argentina international’s future at the English club is uncertain, with the possibility of his departure during the next transfer window being discussed.

However, Barcelona continue to hold an interest in another defender from La Liga. French website Foot Mercato, citing Spanish newspaper Marca, reports that the Catalan club remain keen on Real Betis centre-back Natan.

The 25-year-old has impressed with his performances and is regarded as one of the leading defenders in La Liga. Barcelona had identified Natan as a target during the previous summer transfer window and, according to the report, have not abandoned their interest.

Natan is under contract at Real Betis until 2030. He joined the club from Napoli, and the length of that agreement could make negotiations difficult for Barcelona.

The defender is also expected to attract highly lucrative offers in the coming months, potentially increasing the difficulty of any attempt by Barcelona to secure his services.

Barcelona therefore appear to have several options as they consider how to strengthen their defence. The club’s immediate priority is to assess which targets are available, while Flick is understood to be open to taking advantage of any opportunity to improve the squad.

The prospect of a new defensive signing will now depend on whether Barcelona’s hierarchy decides to act in the winter window, and whether Flick can persuade the club to complete a deal.
