The 2-1 La Liga victory over Barcelona at Santiago Bernabeu on 27 October 2025 was more than a result for Real Madrid. It exposed tensions inside the dressing room, with Vinicius Junior appearing to challenge Xabi Alonso and cameras capturing a dispute the club’s hierarchy could not conceal.
Now, as Rafael Nadal’s expected arrival on the Real Madrid board draws closer, that incident has returned to the spotlight. The question facing Vinicius is whether the man who warned him about his conduct a year ago could soon be in a position to hold him accountable.
Nadal’s appointment still requires approval from the club’s members’ general assembly. If confirmed, the former tennis player will join the board as an honorary member of Real Madrid and one of Spain’s most prominent sporting figures. His move into football administration could therefore carry particular significance for Vinicius.
Nadal’s warning to Vinicius
Nadal’s previous comments resurfaced after his appearance on the programme Universo Valdano, where he discussed the confrontation involving Vinicius and Xabi Alonso during the Clasico against Barcelona.
Although Nadal has consistently advocated resolving disputes through dialogue, he issued a clear warning to the Brazilian forward.
“Things can be resolved by talking and through mutual understanding. I think Vini needs to understand who has authority and respect it, as does the club, given what it means to be a Real Madrid player,” Nadal said.
“He does that by giving his best every day, but some of his behaviour, which is not always well received, can be corrected through dialogue and by recognising that certain things need to improve.”
At the time, Nadal’s remarks appeared to be little more than advice. In Madrid, however, they are now being viewed as an indication of how he might operate within the club: no favouritism and no protection for a star at the expense of Real Madrid’s authority.
Nadal also stressed that Vinicius must be the first person determined to improve.
“He must be the first to want to find a way to improve. When I hear him speak in interviews and say that he wants to improve in every aspect, he needs strong allies. I am convinced Real Madrid will find the right people and that he will have people in his close circle who can advise him. The fundamental principle is the desire to do it.”
‘A jewel’ who must be guided
The comments were made while Vinicius’ contract renewal was still under discussion. That agreement was eventually signed in the summer.
Nadal said Real Madrid had a precious asset to protect, but argued that protection should not mean ignoring problems.
“Real Madrid have a jewel in Vinicius that they cannot afford to lose. They must protect that jewel, regardless of whether his performance is unpopular at a particular moment. He is the club’s jewel, and it is a situation Real Madrid, as a historic club, knows how to manage. I think they have managed it well.”
That approach could make Nadal appear less like an ally and more like a potential critic from within the boardroom. His view is that Vinicius should be guided and corrected before his shine fades.
Nadal also offered advice to Lamine Yamal: “Surround yourself with people who will genuinely help you. Be smart enough to listen to what successful people sometimes do not want to hear. It is not always easy when you are very successful, but you have to find your way back to your real life.”
Although directed at Yamal, the message was also interpreted in Madrid as relevant to Vinicius, whose difficult period has included a dip in form, controversy over his behaviour, advertising trips and a distance from his best level.
