Sayed Moawad, the former Al Ahly and Egypt left-back, has sparked controversy after criticising the club’s team selection for their Egypt Cup round-of-32 match against El Seka El Hadid.

Moawad posted an angry message on Instagram on Friday, shortly after Al Ahly announced their squad for the game, which did not include his son, Omar.

“This has gone too far. Enough injustice. We have reached our limit. God is there,” Moawad wrote.

Although he did not mention Omar by name or explain what had prompted the message, its timing led many to connect the comments with the player’s omission from head coach Houcine Ammouta’s plans for the match against El Seka El Hadid.

Al Ahly have named a 23-man squad for the fixture, which is scheduled to take place at Cairo International Stadium on Saturday.

The club will be without 11 players for the Egypt Cup tie. Three of those absences are because of injury, while a further eight players have been left out for technical reasons by Ammouta’s coaching staff.

The latest incident comes amid previous questions over Omar’s future and his prospects of receiving playing time with Al Ahly’s first team.

In November 2025, Moawad said he believed his own reputation had counted against his son when the club considered giving him an opportunity at senior level.

“My name, Sayed Moawad, has wronged my son Omar by preventing him from playing with the first team,” the former Egypt international said in televised comments. “I am upset for him because he is talented.”

Omar’s position at Al Ahly was also discussed in January 2026 after television presenter Ahmed Shobier reported that there had been moves to send the player on loan to National Bank of Egypt.

Shobier also said ZED were interested in signing Omar permanently. He later reported that Al Ahly had abandoned the idea.

The immediate focus is now on Al Ahly’s Egypt Cup meeting with El Seka El Hadid, with Omar absent from the squad selected for the round-of-32 tie.
