Zamalek edge past Misr Insurance to reach Egypt Cup last 16

Zamalek secured their place in the last 16 of the Egypt Cup with a 3-2 victory over Misr Insurance at Cairo International Stadium.

Mohamed Farag said progressing from the last-32 tie was the most important outcome for his side, who completed the job before the international break.

“Cup matches are always difficult for everyone and do not recognise the technical differences between teams,” Zamalek midfielder Farag told the club’s media centre.

“It was necessary to win and qualify for the last 16 before the start of the international break.”

Farag also described competing with team captain Omar Gaber for a place in the side as a privilege, while highlighting the experience he gains from training alongside him.

“Competing with Omar Gaber is a great honour for me. He is the team captain and I gain experience from training with him,” he said.

“The same applies to Mohamed Ibrahim, who is like a brother to me.”

Zamalek’s goals were scored by Mohamed Shehata, Ahmed Sherif and Adam Kaied.

Guinean player Daouda Kamara and Hisham Yehia scored for Misr Insurance.

Farag said Zamalek’s ambitions extended beyond this round of the competition, adding: “Zamalek are always seeking to win trophies, and that is what we promise the Whites fans in the coming period.”

The victory means Zamalek will face Eastern Company Enppi in the last 16. Eastern Company Enppi reached that stage after beating Proxy by the same scoreline.
