‘Real Madrid are on a different level’ – William Gallas questions whether William Saliba can resist Spanish giants

Former Arsenal defender William Gallas believes William Saliba would find it difficult to turn down Real Madrid if the Spanish giants make an approach for the centre-back, insisting the European champions operate on a different level from his former club.

Saliba has established himself as one of the finest young defenders in European football, attracting interest from some of the continent’s biggest clubs following his impressive performances for Arsenal.

The 25-year-old is currently closing in on a return to action after being sidelined throughout the campaign with a back injury sustained during the World Cup. He has returned to training and is nearing full fitness ahead of Arsenal’s weekend fixture against Hull City.

However, his long-term future at the Emirates Stadium has come under scrutiny, with Real Madrid reportedly monitoring his situation.

Despite signing a new five-year contract in September 2025, which ties him to Arsenal until 2030, Gallas believes the prospect of joining the Spanish giants would be difficult for the French international to ignore.

The former Arsenal captain acknowledged the progress made by Mikel Arteta’s side but argued that Real Madrid’s history, reputation and standing in European football make them a more attractive destination for players.

Gallas: Real Madrid are on another level

Gallas, who represented Arsenal between 2006 and 2010, believes the difference in stature between the two clubs could influence Saliba’s thinking should Madrid formalise their interest.

Speaking in an interview with SeatPick, the former France international admitted that his opinion might not sit well with Arsenal supporters but insisted the Spanish club’s historical pedigree gives them an advantage.

“Are Arsenal at a high enough level now that William Saliba would turn down Real Madrid if they came in for him?” Gallas asked.

“I know a lot of people will be mad about what I’m going to say right now, but if we are talking about the history of both clubs, Real Madrid and Arsenal, then Real Madrid is Real Madrid. They are on a different level.”

Although Arsenal have re-established themselves among England’s leading clubs and become regular contenders in European competitions, Gallas believes Madrid retain a unique appeal.

He argued that players presented with the opportunity to represent the Spanish giants would naturally consider making the move, regardless of their existing club’s status.

“Madrid is Madrid, and I’m telling you, any player who has the opportunity to go to Madrid, they will try to go there, and you can’t blame them. You couldn’t blame a player like Saliba if that is his decision. Could a transfer take place?”

New Arsenal contract offers a major obstacle

Saliba’s contractual situation, however, provides Arsenal with a degree of security as they look to retain one of their most important players.

The defender signed a fresh five-year agreement in September 2025, committing his future to the North London club until 2030.

Arteta had previously revealed that Saliba was clear about his intentions when discussing his future with the Arsenal manager.

“I want to stay here and play for you,” the Frenchman reportedly told Arteta amid the transfer speculation.

His commitment was a significant boost for Arsenal, who have built much of their defensive structure around the partnership between Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães.

The Frenchman’s prolonged absence through injury has also highlighted his importance to Arteta’s plans, with his return expected to strengthen the Gunners’ defensive options.

Will Real Madrid make their move?

Whether Madrid will translate their reported admiration into a formal transfer approach remains uncertain.

The Spanish giants have continued to be linked with promising Premier League talent, with Manchester United youngster JJ Gabriel also reportedly attracting their interest.

However, Saliba’s situation is considerably different, given his established status at Arsenal and the length of his current contract.
