Hansi Flick must decide who will partner Pedri in midfield when Barcelona visit Atletico Madrid on 08 November 2026, with Rodri confirmed to be unavailable for the La Liga fixture.
The match at Riyadh Air Metropolitano is part of the 12th round of La Liga and will demand a balance between Barcelona’s possession-based approach and the physical strength of the home side. Flick has three main options, each offering different qualities.
According to Spanish newspaper AS, Marc Bernal is the leading candidate to replace Rodri. Bernal started regularly at the beginning of the season before Rodri regained his fitness, and Flick also selected him against Paris Saint-Germain two weeks ago after choosing to rest the Spain captain ahead of El Clasico.
Bernal also has a strong personal record against Atletico Madrid. He produced one of his best performances for Barcelona last season in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final at Camp Nou, scoring twice from set-pieces as his side pushed for a historic comeback that ultimately fell short.
Despite those credentials, Flick did not select Bernal for El Clasico, instead opting for Frenkie de Jong, who has gradually been returning to his best level and fitness.
De Jong is therefore a serious contender to play alongside Pedri. He started against Alaves and made only a brief appearance against Aston Villa. After reaching 300 appearances for Barcelona, the Netherlands international said he felt physically fit and stressed that he is a midfielder, despite being used at centre-back against Alaves.
The report suggests De Jong currently holds an advantage in Flick’s thinking for the deeper midfield role in the 4-2-3-1 formation. His experience and ability to control the tempo of a match are seen as important factors before a demanding away game.
The third option is Gavi, although his reduced involvement in recent matches appears to leave him behind Bernal and De Jong in the pecking order. However, his pressing, tackling and willingness to compete in physical battles could make him an attractive alternative.
Gavi has previously impressed at Wanda Metropolitano against Atletico Madrid. He performed strongly in last season’s Champions League quarter-final second leg, where he formed an effective partnership with Pedri.
The pair have also developed a clear understanding after operating as Barcelona’s regular midfield duo in the El Clasico triumph over Real Madrid. Gavi’s inclusion would give Barcelona greater intensity without the ball and could help restrict Atletico’s midfield players, particularly Barrios.
Flick’s choice ultimately comes down to Bernal’s energy, De Jong’s experience or Gavi’s aggression. His decision will shape Barcelona’s midfield in one of the season’s toughest tests, where possession alone is unlikely to be enough against Atletico Madrid. Strength, determination and tactical discipline will also be required.
