Tolu Arokodare sets sights on treble after reaching 12 goals for Ajax

Tolu Arokodare says he wants to score at least three times as many goals this season as he managed for Wolverhampton Wanderers last term, after helping Ajax beat FC Midtjylland 6-1 in the Conference League.

The Nigeria striker scored twice in the emphatic victory, taking his tally to 12 goals in 16 matches. He has now challenged himself to improve significantly on the six goals he scored for Wolverhampton Wanderers last season.

“I did not set myself a specific target, but I always want to do better than the previous season,” Arokodare told Ziggo Sport.

“Now I am aiming for three times my total from last season. At least as much as possible, and even more next season.”

Ajax produced a commanding performance in Denmark, with several players contributing either goals or assists. Arokodare said the result had lifted the entire squad ahead of their next fixture.

“I am happy, the whole team is happy, all the Ajax players are happy. Many different players scored and many others provided assists. A victory like this is very pleasing for the team,” he said with a broad smile.

“It was a comfortable win and we approach the next match with that positive feeling. It will not be easy.”

Ajax will face FC Twente on Sunday at De Grolsch Veste, looking to carry the confidence from their six-goal performance into their next match.

Arokodare was substituted late in the game, with Brazilian forward Marcos Leonardo taking his place. Leonardo then scored his first goal since August, prompting a particularly enthusiastic reaction from his team-mate.

“That is perfect,” Arokodare said, as he explained why he was so pleased to see Leonardo find the net.

“He works extremely hard and, even after scoring his goal, he was still pressing in the 90th minute. It was a beautiful goal, so I hope it gives him confidence again.”
