Elias Mokwana completes long-awaited Kaizer Chiefs move

Elias Mokwana says his move to Kaizer Chiefs should have happened in 2024, before he joined Esperance from Sekhukhune United.

The 26-year-old attacker has now completed his switch to Naturena, fulfilling a childhood ambition by joining the club he supported while growing up.

Mokwana’s arrival has raised expectations among the Kaizer Chiefs faithful, with the winger expected to provide added quality in attack as the club seeks to strengthen its squad and improve its ambitions.

The former Sekhukhune United and Esperance player said the possibility of joining the Soweto club first arose during his time with Sekhukhune, but the transfer was prevented by circumstances at the time.

“I grew up supporting Amakhosi. I first heard that they were interested in me when I was at Sekhukhune. Instead of going to Esperance, I was supposed to come here, but unfortunately some obstacles prevented it from happening at the time,” Mokwana told the club’s official website.

The failed move meant Mokwana continued his career in Tunisia with Esperance, where he developed his game before eventually securing the transfer to Kaizer Chiefs.

Although he was disappointed that the move did not happen initially, Mokwana has now joined the club he supported as a boy and described the confirmation of the transfer as an emotional moment.

He said he was with his sisters when he received the news and immediately called his mother to share it.

“I was sitting with my sisters, and the first thing I did was phone my mother to share the good news with her. I can’t explain the feeling exactly. I’m excited. It’s a very nice feeling. This is a good place with good people, and I am very happy to be here.”

Mokwana views the move as more than another step in his playing career. Wearing Kaizer Chiefs’ famous Gold and Black will allow him to realise a long-held dream, while also bringing expectations to contribute to the club’s future success.

The attacker said he wants to establish himself at Naturena and help the club win trophies.

“For me, it is a dream come true. I have always wanted to prove myself in this team and to play a part in bringing some trophies to the Club.”
