Amir Abdou explains Issoufou Dayo’s return to Burkina Faso squad

Burkina Faso manager Amir Abdou has explained his decision to recall Issoufou Dayo for the third and fourth rounds of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The Wydad AC defender announced his international retirement in January, following the Africa Cup of Nations. However, his return to club football with Wydad Casablanca has led to a change in circumstances, with Abdou making direct contact to discuss a possible comeback.

“Issoufou Dayo is an iconic player for our national team. He went through a period when he was considering bringing his career to an end,” Abdou said.

“Today, he is producing very good performances with Wydad Casablanca. I therefore took the liberty of going to meet him so that we could talk. I know how important he is, particularly because of his leadership. He is a respected player who means a great deal to the national team.”

Abdou stressed that Dayo’s return should not be interpreted as a criticism of the defenders already included in the squad. He pointed to their recent displays and also referred to the illness suffered by Edmond Tapsoba.

The manager said Dayo had been made aware that he would have to compete for his place rather than expect an automatic starting role.

“I explained to Issoufou Dayo that his return had to be based on competition. I have not guaranteed him a starting place. He will have to come and fight for his position against the players who are already here,” Abdou added.

“He understood the message and accepted the challenge. I know he is a competitor and that he will do everything he can to play.”

Dayo’s experience is expected to offer more than defensive strength, with Abdou also looking to him to help shape the team’s collective approach and support the management of the squad.

“Beyond his sporting qualities, I also expect a lot from him in terms of the team dynamic, group management and, above all, his leadership,” the manager said.

The Wydad AC defender will therefore have to earn his place in a Burkina Faso defence where competition remains open. Abdou is nevertheless counting on Dayo’s experience and influence to provide additional leadership within the Etalons squad.
