Ballon d’Or winner Harry Kane has extended his Bayern Munich contract by two years, keeping the England captain at the German club until 2029.
The 33-year-old joined Bayern from Tottenham in 2023 and has scored 156 goals in 161 appearances. He said the decision to remain in Munich had effectively been made some time ago.
“We signed the contract yesterday, but to be honest the decision was made quite a long time ago,” Kane said.
“I knew I was going to sign, it was just a matter of some of the details and the behind-the-scenes stuff.”
Kane, who spent more than 10 years at boyhood club Tottenham without winning a team trophy, has since claimed two Bundesliga titles and one German Cup with Bayern. The Champions League remains the notable omission, with Bayern reaching the semi-finals twice in his three campaigns.
He was named men’s player of the year at last month’s Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, becoming the first Englishman to win the award since Michael Owen in 2001 and the first Bayern player since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981. Kane finished ahead of France captain Kylian Mbappe.
“I feel right at home at FC Bayern. I love the club, the fans and the city of Munich. We have a fantastic team and, in Vincent Kompany, a fantastic manager,” he said.
Kane also became the fastest player in German history to score 100 Bundesliga goals. He reached the milestone in 98 matches in September, beating Dieter Mueller’s previous record from 1977 by 31 games.
Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund said the club were “absolutely delighted” to retain the striker.
“With Harry Kane we have the Ballon d’Or winner on the pitch — a team player, a leader, the best all-round striker in the world,” he added.
Negotiations had been under way since August, with the length of the new contract reported by German media to have been the main point of disagreement.
Bayern ‘stretched our limits’ for Kane
Bayern chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen declined to confirm reports that Kane had become the highest-paid player in Europe, but said the club had “stretched our limits” to complete the deal.
“It’s a major contract for a major player. And a fair one. Harry has given us an incredible amount of joy… He has shown he is worth every cent,” Dreesen said.
Kane’s continued future at Bayern came despite interest that Premier League clubs might have had in bringing him back to England. He has consistently spoken positively about the welcome he received from the club, city and supporters.
In August, he told FourFourTwo magazine that his desire to return to the Premier League had diminished.
“When I first left, for sure it was something that I thought I’d definitely be coming back. That itch isn’t there as much anymore,” he said.
“I’m extremely happy here in Munich. It’s opened my eyes to a totally different world of football outside of England. It’s made me appreciate European football even more.”
Kane scored 61 goals for Bayern and 12 for England last season, giving him 73 in total. Only Lionel Messi, with 82 in 2011-12, has scored more in a calendar season this century.
Bayern won the Bundesliga and German Cup double last season, while Paris Saint-Germain edged them 6-5 on aggregate in a Champions League semi-final.
This season, Bayern are the only unbeaten side in Europe’s top five leagues. They lead the Bundesliga ahead of Dortmund on goal difference and are 13th in the Champions League table after four of eight league-phase matches.
