Liverpool striker Alexander Isak has criticised his team’s inability to protect their lead after suffering a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Fenerbahce in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, November 4.

The Swedish forward was particularly frustrated with the manner of the defeat, insisting Liverpool should have taken advantage of twice going ahead rather than allowing the Turkish side to complete a comeback in Istanbul.

Liverpool initially took the lead through Trey Nyoni before Isak doubled their advantage to make it 2-1, scoring his first Champions League goal since joining the Premier League giants.

However, the visitors failed to maintain their advantage as Fenerbahce fought back to secure all three points on a rainy night in the Turkish capital.

The result handed Liverpool their first defeat in the 2026-27 Champions League campaign and extended their difficult run of results to back-to-back losses.

Despite finding the net in Europe’s premier club competition for the first time in Liverpool colours, Isak admitted the defeat had taken much of the satisfaction out of his personal achievement.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the match, the striker expressed disappointment at his side’s inability to turn promising positions into a positive result.

“It’s never easy here but today I think we could and should get more out of the game. It’s a bit sloppy that we had the lead twice and for us to then lose the game is not good enough. Obviously we’re going to be disappointed from that.”

Isak questions Liverpool’s failure to silence Fenerbahce

The 26-year-old also identified Liverpool’s defensive shortcomings as a major factor behind their defeat, particularly their inability to capitalise on scoring opportunities and quieten the home supporters.

Fenerbahce enjoyed considerable backing from their supporters throughout the contest, creating a challenging atmosphere for the visitors.

Isak believes Liverpool needed to respond better after taking the lead, arguing that scoring goals should have helped them take control of the occasion and prevent the hosts from building momentum.

However, their inability to maintain their advantage allowed Fenerbahce to remain in contention and eventually turn the game around.

“The atmosphere is really good and it’s tough, of course. So, the one thing you can do to keep them quiet is score goals. So, it’s a shame that we conceded quickly and we should capitalise on that. That’s where we were lacking today,” he added.

His assessment reflected the frustration within the Liverpool camp after a performance in which their attacking contributions were not matched by the defensive discipline required to secure victory.

First Liverpool Champions League goal offers little consolation

Although Isak finally opened his Champions League scoring account for Liverpool, the forward admitted the personal milestone meant considerably less following the defeat.

The Swedish international had hoped his second-half contribution would prove decisive and help the visitors secure an important result away from home.

Instead, Fenerbahce’s response ensured his effort was overshadowed by Liverpool’s inability to see out the contest.

The striker acknowledged that scoring remains important to him but maintained that individual achievements must take a back seat when the team fails to win.

“I was happy with it at the time. I was hoping that it was going to lead to more. I’m always happy to score goals but today we lost, so it takes a bit from it.”

Isak urges Liverpool to respond after consecutive defeats

With Liverpool now dealing with consecutive defeats, Isak has called for a swift response, insisting their position in the Champions League remains recoverable.

The forward was keen to avoid unnecessary panic, pointing out that Liverpool had put themselves in a favourable position before Wednesday’s setback.

He believes winning their next fixture would help restore confidence and put the team back on track in the competition.

“I think we’ve put ourselves in good positions, so that today if we lose this game it’s not a chaos situation. We just need to get back to winning ways and if we win the next game, we are back to a really good position,” he said.

Liverpool will now look to put their Istanbul disappointment behind them and return to winning ways as they continue their pursuit of progress in the Champions League.
