Christian Kofane nears Bayer Leverkusen return ahead of Marseille clash

Christian Kofane is closing in on a return to action for Bayer Leverkusen after recovering from a thigh injury, although his availability for Thursday’s Europa League meeting with Olympique Marseille remains uncertain.

The 20-year-old Cameroon international took part in Leverkusen’s final training session on Wednesday, providing an encouraging sign ahead of the European encounter at the BayArena.

Kofane has been sidelined for approximately six weeks after sustaining a muscle injury in his left thigh during the international break in October.

However, despite his return to training, head coach Carles Martínez is unwilling to rush the striker back into competitive action following his lengthy absence.

Speaking at Wednesday’s press conference, Martínez confirmed that a late decision would be made regarding the forward’s inclusion in the matchday squad.

“We still have to decide about Kofi today,” the Spanish coach explained.

He added that although the youngster feels good, the club must ensure that his return represents the right step in his recovery.

Kofane’s availability will therefore depend on the medical team’s assessment and how he responds to training.

Leverkusen cautious with Kofane’s recovery

Leverkusen are keen to avoid another setback for the young forward, particularly with another important Bundesliga fixture against FC Köln scheduled for Sunday.

His return would provide an additional attacking option for Martínez, who has had to manage several injury problems within his squad.

The Cameroon international had made an encouraging impression before his injury and will be eager to resume his development when fully fit.

For now, Leverkusen will assess his condition before deciding whether to include him against Marseille or wait until the weekend.

The Bundesliga side will host the French club on Thursday, November 5, in the fourth round of the Europa League league phase.
