Eintracht Frankfurt defender Lilian Brassier has decided to represent Togo at international level, ending his previous association with France’s youth national teams ahead of the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The 27-year-old centre-back, who was born in Argenteuil in the Paris suburbs, has opted to switch his international allegiance and is now in line to make his debut for the Togolese national team.

Brassier previously represented France at Under-18, Under-19 and Under-20 levels, earning one appearance for the Under-19 side and five caps for the Under-20 team.

According to reports, the defender has been included in the preliminary squad announced by Togo head coach Patrice Neveu for the country’s double-header against Algeria scheduled for November 14 and 17.

His potential arrival represents an important addition to the Sparrowhawks’ defensive options as they prepare for two challenging encounters against the North African giants.

Brassier could form a central defensive partnership with experienced Getafe defender and Togo captain Djene Dakonam, who remains one of the most established figures in the national team.

The Eintracht Frankfurt defender brings considerable experience from European football, having previously featured in France’s Ligue 1 with Stade Rennais, Stade Brestois and Olympique de Marseille.

During his time in the French top flight, Brassier made 117 appearances, scoring six goals and providing three assists across his spells with the three clubs.

He moved to the Bundesliga last summer and has quickly established himself as an important member of Adi Hütter’s squad, starting all seven of his appearances for the German side.

His decision to represent Togo comes at a crucial period for the West African nation, who are hoping to revive their fortunes in the race for qualification to the 2027 AFCON.

The Sparrowhawks have struggled in their qualifying campaign and currently occupy third position in Group I, making their upcoming meetings with Algeria particularly important.

Togo have not featured at the Africa Cup of Nations since their appearance at the 2017 tournament in Gabon and are determined to end their prolonged absence from the continental showpiece.

Brassier’s international switch could therefore provide a significant boost to Neveu’s defensive department as Togo seek to improve their performances and revive their qualification hopes.

His inclusion in the preliminary squad, however, means he is still awaiting the opportunity to make his first senior international appearance for the Sparrowhawks.
