Rodri injury to be assessed before Atletico Madrid game, says Hansi Flick

Barcelona midfielder Rodri will undergo medical tests after suffering a calf problem during the 3-0 Champions League win over Aston Villa, manager Hansi Flick says.

Rodri was unable to complete the match after reporting discomfort. Flick said the player’s condition would be assessed ahead of Barcelona’s La Liga meeting with Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

“Rodri has discomfort in his calf muscle and will undergo medical examinations today to assess his condition before the match against Atletico Madrid,” Flick told reporters.

Barcelona secured a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa in the fourth round of the Champions League main phase.

The match was also notable for the return of Frenkie de Jong, who has been working his way back after a lengthy injury absence. Flick said the midfielder’s involvement was important, while stressing that he was not yet fully fit.

“It is very important that Frenkie de Jong has returned to the squad,” said Flick. “He is performing well, but he has not yet reached 100% fitness.”

“It is normal for him to need some time after a long-term injury, but we have to manage him step by step. He is an excellent player.”

Barcelona will travel to face Atletico Madrid next Sunday in a key fixture in the next round of La Liga.

Flick’s side are top of the Spanish league with 30 points from 11 matches.
