Aaron Danks praises Dayot Upamecano after Bayern Munich's Champions League victory

Bayern Munich assistant coach Aaron Danks has praised Dayot Upamecano following his impressive performance in the club’s 2-0 Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid, insisting the defender has been underrated for a long time.

The 28-year-old delivered another commanding display at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Tuesday, helping Bayern secure a clean sheet against Diego Simeone’s side.

Speaking after the match, Danks highlighted Upamecano’s defensive qualities, personality and importance to the team, believing his contributions have not always received the recognition they deserve.

“Upamecano’s performances have often been underestimated. What he brings to the team through his character and personality, as well as his performances, is outstanding,” Danks said.

The English coach also praised the defender’s strength in individual battles, revealing that he regularly demonstrates his qualities against Bayern’s top attackers during training.

“He is a really difficult defender to play against. I see it every day in training, where our top attackers come up against him and he holds his own in the duels,” he added.

Danks also acknowledged the contributions of Jonathan Tah and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, but insisted Upamecano deserved particular recognition for his performance.

“Upamecano deserves recognition for his performances. He has been fantastic.”

The victory extended Bayern’s impressive Champions League campaign as they maintained their perfect record after four matches.
