Alex Baena paid tribute to Tenerife striker Jesus De Miguel before Atletico Madrid’s Champions League meeting with Bayern Munich at the Metropolitano Stadium.
The 30-year-old De Miguel died on Tuesday morning after suffering a serious collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Ouno during the teams’ Spanish second-tier match on Monday evening.
Tenerife confirmed his death in a statement issued by the club.
“With broken hearts, a lump in our throats and an inability to believe what has happened, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death of player Jesus De Miguel Almeida, which occurred on Tuesday morning, 3 November 2026, at 08:00,” the club said.
According to Marca, Baena arrived at the Metropolitano wearing an official Atletico Madrid shirt bearing De Miguel’s name. The shirt had been specially printed for the occasion.
Baena’s gesture represented his Atletico team-mates, while the Madrid club was among those to use its social media channels throughout the morning to express condolences following the tragedy.
The Spain international is one of Diego Simeone’s key players for the match against the German side in the fourth round of the Champions League league phase.
European football’s governing body Uefa had decided that a minute’s silence would be observed before every match in this round of the competition. The Spanish Football Federation also announced three days of mourning and the suspension of its matches.
De Miguel’s death followed the incident during Tenerife’s away game against Andorra in Spain’s second division on Monday. The collision with Ouno occurred during the match, before the club announced the player had died the following morning.
Atletico’s tribute came before a fixture involving two clubs competing in the Champions League league phase, with Baena helping to lead the Madrid side’s pre-match response to the news from Tenerife.
