Manchester United face a difficult task in the second half after falling 2-0 behind to AS Roma at Old Trafford in the fourth matchday of the league phase of the Champions League.
Michael Carrick’s side have struggled to contain a highly efficient Roma attack, with the visitors taking full advantage of the space available in the Manchester United defence.
AS Roma took the lead in the 11th minute when Rodrigo Mora found Matias Soule. The forward was given too much room and calmly placed a left-footed finish beyond Senne Lammens.
The visitors doubled their advantage six minutes later after Heaven was penalised for handball inside the Manchester United penalty area. Donyell Malen took responsibility from the spot and sent Lammens the wrong way to make it 2-0.
Manchester United have tried to respond but have lacked accuracy in possession and have been unable to create sustained pressure on the Roma defence. Bryan Mbeumo was kept under control by Leonardo Balerdi, while Carlos Baleba attempted to threaten from distance but failed to find the target.
Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo also looked to provide a route back into the match, but neither was able to produce an effort that seriously troubled the visitors.
AS Roma remained dangerous whenever they were able to attack the spaces left by Manchester United. They came close to extending their lead in added time at the end of the first half, when Matias Soule’s curling effort narrowly missed the top corner.
Manchester United therefore go into the interval two goals down and needing a significantly improved display after the break if they are to get back into the game. For now, AS Roma have controlled the contest and made the most of their opportunities in front of goal.
