Hossam Hassan mocks FIFA ban

Former Zamalek captain Mahmoud Abdel-Razek, popularly known as Shikabala, has called on Hossam Hassan to resign as head coach of the Egyptian national team.

Shikabala criticised the atmosphere surrounding the national team, describing it as chaotic and insisting that Hassan’s position requires greater authority and respect.

Speaking on MBC Egypt 2, the former Egypt international said he had never witnessed such disorder surrounding the national team coach.

“For the first time in the history of the Egyptian national team, I see chaos around the coach, and Hossam Hassan should resign,” Shikabala said.

He added that the national team manager must command respect through his status, personality and leadership.

“The coach of the Egyptian national team must have status, prestige and personality, and Hossam Hassan’s resignation has nothing to do with football,” he added.

Shikabala further urged Hassan, whom he described as someone he respects and admires, to step aside in the interest of the national team.

“From someone who loves Captain Hossam Hassan, you must submit your resignation. The coach of the Egyptian national team must have a special status,” he said.

Hassan, 60, has been in charge of Egypt since 2024, with his current contract running until 2030.

The Pharaohs are preparing for their November international break, when they are scheduled to face Malawi in a double-header on November 13 and 17 as part of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Egypt have collected four points from their opening two matches, following a goalless draw against Angola in Cairo before recording a 5-0 victory over South Sudan.

Despite the criticism, Hassan enjoyed a successful campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, guiding Egypt to the last 16 for the first time in their history.

Egypt progressed from the group stage with five points without suffering a defeat before eliminating Australia on penalties in the round of 32.

Their campaign eventually ended in the last 16 after a 3-2 defeat against Argentina.
