Mourinho and Real Madrid youth coach set for historic European showdown

Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid youth coach Alvaro Lopez are both enjoying unbeaten European campaigns, setting up a notable meeting between former mentor and pupil as the season gathers pace.

The pair will travel together on Tuesday when the Real Madrid and youth-team squads fly to Athens for their next matches in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Youth League.

Mourinho is seeking to take top spot in the senior competition after winning all three of his matches so far, against Inter, Roma and Leipzig. Lopez, meanwhile, is aiming to retain a historic lead in the youth tournament after Real Madrid’s Under-20 side recorded a third successive victory by beating Leipzig in their previous fixture.

Their shared story was highlighted by Spanish newspaper Marca last season, well before Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid was confirmed. During his first spell in charge at the club, Mourinho gave the player who is now coaching the youth team his senior debut in 2012.

Fourteen years later, the former manager and his one-time player are producing outstanding results from the training base at Valdebebas. Their performances have raised the possibility of Real Madrid leading both the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Youth League at the same time.

Outstanding starts

Mourinho heads to Athens after overseeing a run of seven consecutive victories for Real Madrid. The club have now won 12 of their 14 matches this season in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League, giving them an 86% success rate.

Lopez has made an equally impressive start in charge of Real Madrid’s third team in the club’s hierarchy. His side have won 11 of their 12 matches, representing a 92% success rate.

The youth team’s victories have come across three competitions. They lead La Liga after collecting seven wins and one draw, while they are also top of the UEFA Youth League with three wins. In addition, Lopez’s team won the final of the Under-20 Intercontinental Cup.

The upcoming journey to Athens will therefore bring together two coaches whose results have made a striking impact at the beginning of the campaign. Mourinho will be pursuing first place in Europe’s leading club competition, while Lopez will attempt to preserve the position he secured after the victory over Leipzig.

For Mourinho, Lopez’s progress is also a source of pride. The Portuguese coach helped launch the career of a former Real Madrid youth player who is now making a successful transition into management, while Mourinho remains one of the most influential figures in Lopez’s coaching development.
