Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel was taken to hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Ouno during the closing stages of their Spanish second division match.
The game at the Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez stadium was suspended after de Miguel was knocked unconscious in stoppage time, with the score level at 2-2. Referee Manuel Angel Perez Hernandez sent off Ouno after the incident.
De Miguel had chased a high ball beyond the halfway line when Ouno came out of his goal and attempted to clear it. The two players collided heavily, leaving the Tenerife forward motionless on the pitch.
Players from both sides immediately called for medical help as concern spread among those in the stands, according to Spanish newspaper Marca.
Medical staff spent more than five minutes treating de Miguel before taking him from the pitch on a stretcher. He was then placed in an ambulance equipped with the necessary medical equipment.
The seriousness of the situation led Perez Hernandez to stop play. He informed the captains and coaching staff of both teams that the match would be suspended, with de Miguel’s condition taking priority over the result.
Ouno, who was leaving the field after being shown the red card, later returned to check on de Miguel. Tenerife officials and the player’s team-mates gathered beside the ambulance, visibly distressed by the events.
Striker remains unconscious in hospital
Reports after the collision said de Miguel had suffered a cardiac arrest because of the force of the impact. Paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation inside the ambulance and managed to restore his pulse.
His condition initially stabilised and he began breathing without assistance, although he remained unconscious, according to Spanish newspaper AS.
The ambulance left the stadium for Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria University Hospital, commonly known as La Candelaria Hospital, with medical staff accompanying him. He was taken there for further tests and continued monitoring.
The latest updates indicated a slight improvement, with de Miguel breathing normally after the resuscitation efforts. However, he remained unconscious and under medical care while awaiting the results of examinations and a medical report that would provide a clearer assessment of his condition.
The incident overshadowed the match, turning the final moments of the fixture into an anxious wait for news of the Tenerife striker’s wellbeing.
