Barcelona will look to strengthen their defensive record when they host Aston Villa at Spotify Camp Nou on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, in the fourth round of the UEFA Champions League league phase.
Goalkeeper Joan Garcia faces two challenges in the match: recovering from the disappointment of conceding a late goal against Alaves and finally ending Barcelona’s run of allowing goals in every Champions League game this season.
According to Sport, Barcelona have conceded six goals across the opening three rounds of the competition and have yet to keep a clean sheet. The match against Aston Villa therefore represents another opportunity for Garcia to bring that sequence to an end.
The goalkeeper has made a positive impression between the posts since joining Barcelona. He has also shown alertness and speed when coming out of his area to clear balls played behind the defensive line.
However, Barcelona’s wider defensive record has remained a concern. They have kept only four clean sheets in 11 La Liga matches this season, with three of those coming during the opening four rounds.
Since 9 September, Hans Flick’s side have managed to prevent their opponents from scoring only once. That clean sheet came against Getafe at Spotify Camp Nou.
Garcia admitted he finished Barcelona’s comfortable victory over Alaves with some disappointment after being beaten in the closing stages. Speaking to Sport 3, he acknowledged that goalkeepers naturally want to complete matches without conceding.
“All goalkeepers will tell you the same thing: they want to keep clean sheets,” he said.
“But in the end, we know the most important thing is to win. It is better to do that without conceding, but the priority is to take the three points.”
Barcelona’s Champions League run without a clean sheet now stretches to 18 consecutive matches. The club’s last shutout in the competition came in early April 2025, when they kept Borussia Dortmund scoreless in the first leg of their quarter-final.
The Catalan side also failed to keep a clean sheet in any European fixture they played last season. Their meeting with Aston Villa will therefore test not only Garcia’s ability to respond to the late setback against Alaves, but also Barcelona’s capacity to produce the defensive performance they have been unable to deliver consistently in Europe.
The match will be played at Spotify Camp Nou on Tuesday, 3 November 2026.
