Udinese consider Vladimir Petkovic as relegation crisis puts Kosta Runjaic under pressure
Udinese are considering a return for Vladimir Petkovic as they assess whether to replace Kosta Runjaic following their heavy 5-2 defeat by Roma.
According to Foot Mercato, Petkovic has emerged as a possible successor to the German coach, whose position is increasingly uncertain. The Bosnian would be an unexpected choice, but he is familiar with Italian football and is available after leaving his role with Algeria in August.
Udinese are currently 19th in Serie A with five points from 10 matches. The club’s situation has been described as extremely serious, and the board is understood to be unwilling to wait until the next international break before deciding whether a change is needed.
Petkovic previously managed Lazio between 2012 and 2014. During that period, he led the club to the Coppa Italia title in 2013, beating Roma in the final.
The 63-year-old later established an international reputation with Switzerland. He took them to the quarter-finals of Euro 2020, where they eliminated France on penalties before their tournament ended in the last eight.
Petkovic is now one of the candidates being considered by Udinese, although Paolo Zanetti remains in contention. Roberto D’Aversa’s prospects have weakened during negotiations, while Davide Ballardini has also been suggested as a possible appointment.
The next few hours are expected to provide further clarity over the identity of Udinese’s next manager, with the club under pressure to halt a poor start to the season.
Petkovic left Algeria after the team’s World Cup exit, which came in the round of 32 following a 2-0 defeat by Switzerland.
His time in charge ended amid strong criticism and widespread anger among supporters. The coach was accused of failing to establish a clear tactical identity, while several of his decisions during the tournament were questioned.
The relationship between Petkovic and the Algerian Football Federation subsequently deteriorated significantly. Their association was ended after both sides reached an agreement over the financial terms of his departure.
