Mamelodi Sundowns to release players in January

Mamelodi Sundowns could make significant changes to their squad during the January transfer window following their disappointing elimination from the CAF Champions League.

The South African giants suffered a major setback in their continental campaign after failing to overcome Angolan side Wiliete, playing out a 1-1 draw in the return leg at home following a goalless stalemate in the first encounter.

The result condemned the reigning champions to an early exit from the competition, ending their hopes of defending the continental title and securing a place in the group stage for the first time in 11 years.

With the disappointment raising questions about the team’s performances and squad depth, former Sundowns defender Hilton Jordan believes the club could allow some fringe players to leave on loan when the transfer window reopens in January.

Jordan, however, does not expect a major overhaul of the squad, insisting that the club’s established core will remain together as they continue their pursuit of domestic silverware.

Speaking in an interview with KickOff, he suggested that players who have struggled to secure regular playing time could be given the opportunity to seek opportunities elsewhere to maintain their development.

“Some players may go out on loan in January, but the core of the team will remain. They still have the Carling Cup, the Betway Premiership and the Nedbank Cup,” Jordan said.

Sundowns’ premature departure from the CAF Champions League represents a significant disappointment for a club that has consistently featured among Africa’s leading sides in recent years.

Their failure to progress also means they will not have the opportunity to continue their continental campaign in the CAF Confederation Cup, leaving domestic competitions as their remaining major targets this season.

The Brazilians will now be expected to channel their attention towards the Betway Premiership, Carling Knockout Cup and Nedbank Cup as they seek to recover from their continental disappointment.

With the January transfer window approaching, the club’s management could assess the composition of the squad, particularly players who have found opportunities limited under the technical team.

However, Jordan’s assessment suggests that any changes are likely to be limited to fringe members of the squad rather than a major restructuring of the team.
