Virgil van Dijk said Liverpool were left to rue their failure to make more of their opportunities after a 1-0 defeat by Arsenal at Anfield.
Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the Premier League match in the first half, giving the champions all three points despite Liverpool enjoying spells of pressure and creating chances of their own.
Florian Wirtz went closest to finding an equaliser when his curling free-kick struck the crossbar, while Arsenal’s defence held firm to prevent Liverpool from claiming anything from the game.
“Disappointment. We played at home, we had some opportunities. Obviously we tried everything,” Liverpool captain Van Dijk told Sky Sports.
The defender felt Liverpool needed to apply greater pressure in the closing stages, especially by putting more deliveries into the Arsenal penalty area.
“I think we could have maybe done a bit better towards the last 15 minutes of the game to get more balls in the box. But it wasn’t enough today,” he said.
Liverpool improved after falling behind and created a significant chance for Alexis Mac Allister, but were unable to turn their pressure into a goal.
Van Dijk was also frustrated that Liverpool were not awarded a penalty in the first half after Alexander Isak appeared to have his shirt pulled inside the area.
“I think it was also a clear penalty. I’ve seen it back, and I’ve seen it being given on other occasions, but today it wasn’t meant to be,” Van Dijk said.
Despite the defeat, Van Dijk believes Liverpool are progressing as their team continues to develop. He said the players need more time to understand one another and adapt to the changes within the squad.
“When someone new comes into the building and everything is changing, it just needs time. It just needs working together, going through difficult moments and good moments,” he said.
The Liverpool captain remains confident that the team’s work will eventually produce better results, with signs of improvement already visible in recent weeks.
“I’m pretty sure that things will click and things will work out. Our fans can see there is so much improvement already over the last recent weeks, but we also work our socks off.”
However, Van Dijk stressed that improved performances must be matched by results. He acknowledged that Liverpool cannot afford to squander opportunities, particularly in home matches at Anfield.
Liverpool will have the chance to respond on Wednesday when they travel to Turkey to face Fenerbahce in the Champions League.
