University of Fort Hare aim to stay in 2026 Hollywoodbets Super League title race

University of Fort Hare coach Simphiwe Mafene says his side are determined to remain in contention for the 2026 Hollywoodbets Super League title after moving to the top of the Super Rise stream.

The Baby Wolves strengthened their position with a 1-0 victory at Kabokweni Stadium in Mpumalanga, taking their points tally to 28 from 13 matches.

With only one fixture remaining, Mafene says the team’s priority is to collect maximum points and complete the campaign strongly. Their final match is against City Lads Ladies FC.

“We only have City Lads Ladies FC left, and our plan was to reach 31 points by the end of the season. We are now three points short of that target,” Mafene told SABC Sport.

“The plan is to push until the end and remain contenders. We just need to allow the players not only to work hard but also to enjoy their football.”

The Eastern Cape side are in their third season in the league and currently lead the Super Rise stream with eight wins, four draws and one defeat.

Mafene believes the competition has provided teams with a fair platform to display their ability, although he feels the tournament can still be improved.

The coach also noted that the competition gave each team an opportunity to host matches.

“I believe there is still room for improvement, honestly. Nevertheless, I believe it was fair and did not favour anyone, because every team had an opportunity to host,” he said.

“As I said, there is room for improvement. Players were given a chance to compete and showcase their talent.”

UFH will now prepare for Saturday’s meeting with relegation-threatened City Lads Ladies FC. Mafene expects a difficult contest but believes his players are capable of securing the points needed to end their campaign on a positive note.

“The main goal is to finish strong, like I said. It will be closely contested, but we must collect maximum points,” he said.
