Kaizer Chiefs step up interest in free agent Elias Mokwana after Espérance exit
Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly considering a move for former Bafana Bafana winger Elias Mokwana as they look to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the upcoming transfer window.
The Soweto giants have emerged as serious contenders for the signature of the 27-year-old attacker, who is currently a free agent following his departure from Tunisian powerhouse Espérance in September 2026.
According to reports, Mokwana’s representatives have already presented his availability to Kaizer Chiefs, with the club assessing the financial and sporting implications of bringing him to Naturena.
The potential move could offer Amakhosi an opportunity to strengthen their attacking department without paying a transfer fee, although negotiations have yet to produce an official agreement.
Mokwana is no stranger to South African football, having previously made a name for himself with Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership before securing a move to Espérance in 2024.
His performances in the domestic league earned him recognition and eventually opened the door to international football. He later had a spell on loan with Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Hazem before becoming available following his departure from the Tunisian club.
His familiarity with the South African top flight could make him an attractive option for Chiefs, who would be signing a player already accustomed to the demands and competitive nature of the Betway Premiership.
The winger’s pace, dribbling ability and creativity are qualities that could provide an additional attacking dimension to the Chiefs squad, particularly as the club continues its efforts to improve its offensive output.
Former Amakhosi captain Itumeleng Khune has also thrown his weight behind the possibility of Mokwana joining the Soweto giants, comparing the winger’s style of play to former Chiefs favourite Jabu Mahlangu.
Meanwhile, Mokwana had previously been linked with a move to Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca, but the proposed transfer failed to materialise, leaving his future uncertain.
With Chiefs reportedly exploring the possibility of securing his services, the former Sekhukhune United attacker could have an opportunity to return to South African football.
However, despite the growing speculation, no agreement has been officially announced, with Mokwana’s next destination still to be determined.
