Samuel Essende scores twice despite Young Boys defeat to FC Zurich
Congolese striker Samuel Essende continued his impressive scoring form with a brace for Young Boys, although his two goals were not enough to prevent a 5-3 defeat against FC Zurich in the Swiss First Division.
The Leopards international found the net twice during the 12th round encounter, taking his league tally to 14 goals this season and his overall total to 15 across all competitions.
Essende struck in the 22nd and 29th minutes, giving another reminder of his goalscoring ability despite Young Boys eventually suffering defeat in an entertaining contest.
The former Paris Saint-Germain academy graduate has been one of the standout performers for the Bern-based club this season. His consistent contributions in front of goal have made him an important figure in the team’s attacking set-up.
His latest performance further highlights the difference between his club form and his record at international level.
Despite his impressive displays in Switzerland, Essende has struggled to reproduce the same goalscoring efficiency with the Democratic Republic of Congo national team. The striker has managed just one goal in 12 appearances for the Leopards.
His current form will therefore be encouraging for the Congolese national team, particularly as they look to get more attacking contributions from their forwards.
For Young Boys, however, the result against FC Zurich brought an end to their unbeaten start to the season. Although the defeat represents a setback, it does little to take away from the team’s positive performances in the opening stages of the campaign.
Young Boys remain second in the league standings with 25 points and will be keen to respond positively in their next fixture.
They are scheduled to face Lucerne on Saturday, November 7, with the encounter also bringing them up against two Congolese players, Oscar Kabwik and Faveurdi Bongeli.
The match will provide an opportunity for Young Boys to return to winning ways and maintain their position among the leading sides in the Swiss top flight.
For Essende, the immediate focus will be on maintaining his remarkable scoring run. With 14 league goals already to his name, the striker is enjoying an excellent individual campaign, even as his team looks to recover from its first defeat of the season.
